It was a telephone call to the police station by an unknown citizen on Thursday night that triggered the police search and rescue of a medical doctor who was kidnapped and was being taken away to be kept for a ransom.

Dr Marvindra Maharaj, 35, survived a highway chase reaching speeds of 180 kilometres an hour, and a police confrontation with his armed captors.

He spent the day yesterday helping police build a case against the 19-year-old suspect who was caught and dragged out of the bushes by Crime Suppression Unit officers.
