According to a criminologist, serial rapists in Trinidad have mutated into serial killers.
A local criminologist believes serial killers are on the loose. The number of women and children who have gone missing clearly indicates that at least some of them have been murdered and their bodies disposed of, claimed social researcher Daurius Figueira.
"If they are trafficking women out of Trinidad, I have seen no evidence of it," he said. Rather, Figueira's theory is that we are seeing the work of serial rapists who have mutated into killers.
"There were serial rapists operating before," he said, "but what has happened is that it has mutated.
"Within the orgy of social violence, predators blossom. A serial rapist is one step away from being a serial killer. And at the end of the r-pe, if you have no victim, you have no crime."
One pattern that has emerged is that of abducting women waiting for public transport, taking them away, violating them and then dumping their bodies.
"Dead and dumped, that is a primary indication of serial killer activity," said Figueira.
"They are picking up women, killing them and dumping them in killing fields - the old cane fields are a major attraction.
"When you see disappearing women of a certain age, who depend on public transport, especially after peak hours, the alarm bells go off."
