Title: Land for the landless

Comments: The picture of a hand-built shack used as home for some unfortunate citizens shown in the Express, attached to the article entitled 'Land for the landless'scrapped is a terrible disgrace bearing in mind the trillion of dollars wasted and unaccounted for by our politicians since our independence. This aspect of life in T & T has remained in the same mode as it was in the days when slavery ended. With the amount of money generated by the production of oil and gas over the last 55 years people living in such condition and accommodation should have been a thing of the past. It just goes to show that despite all the talk by politicians in the past and present about welfare, housing and caring for the poor of this nation it is contrary to the reality of life here.Politicians here are still taking the easy way out yet again, of our internal problems. These poor citizens need proper accommodation not strips of land with shacks as their homes. After 55 years of independence and with being one of the richest nations in the Caribbean everyone in this nation should by now be living in a comfortable home with all modern cons which should include portable drinking water and other essential amenities. It is such a shame that it would appear that those in positions of power and authority still maintain a luxurious life at the expense of the poorer citizens who are perpetually neglected by those who are supposed to represent them and seek to improve their living conditions. The consequence of thus neglect only leads to more crime within our society, something that our politicians have so far ail to comprehend. It is no wonder that the country has become a haven for criminals.
